I recently watched Wicked, but I’ll admit, I didn’t fully understand it. Without much knowledge on The Wizard of Oz, the plot was difficult to follow. I didn’t quite understand why Elphaba, the "Wicked Witch," became the way she did, or why Glinda, the "Good Witch," was so important.
Ariana Grande’s portrayal of Glinda was impressive- her voice was amazing, but the emotional moments didn’t have the same impact on me as they did for others. The songs, like "Defying Gravity," were amazing, but I didn’t feel as moved as I expected. Maybe I needed more background on Oz and the characters’ pasts to really appreciate the show. Still, the production was impressive. The visuals were stunning, with vibrant colors and special effects that brought the magical world of Oz to life. The flying scene in "Defying Gravity," where Elphaba rises above the stage, was great. The costumes helped show each character’s personality. For the majority of the movie, Elphaba wore a long black cloak, showing her "Wicked Witch" persona. Glinda wore sparkly, pink gowns that reflected her bubbly and girly character.
Although this was not my favorite musical, it's clear that its power comes from themes of friendship, standing up against injustice, and staying true to oneself. The show also features important characters, like the disabled sister, whose story adds to the themes of acceptance and dealing with oppression. Overall, while I didn’t fully understand Wicked, I can see why it’s so loved. The visuals and emotional moments make it a standout show.
