The Mandalorian, Disney+’s golden goose in both subscriptions and merchandise (yes Baby Yoda I’m looking at you) has recently aired the last episode of its inaugural season so I figured I’d give it my honest opinion. The show focuses on Dyn Jarren, a Mandalorian who has taken up the profession of Bounty Hunter after the demise of the Empire. When on one of his hunts, he meets The Child or Baby Yoda, a highly valued target to a deep-pocketed Empire officer. The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda go on an intergalactic adventure to try to stave off the other bounty hunters in the galaxy looking for Baby Yoda. That’s as vague as I can be so… WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE MANDALORIAN. IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THE MANDALORIAN, PLEASE GO WATCH IT.
Let’s start with the negatives, considering there aren’t many. The only real problem I have with this season is the main villain, Moff Gideon. He’s a super evil and supposedly dead Imperial Officer looking to weaponize Baby Yoda to restart the Empire. My problem with it is that he doesn’t get mentioned or even appear until the final 10 minutes of the penultimate episode of the series. Gideon is a good villain that will segue into next season but I feel they should’ve implemented him in maybe episode 4 instead of episode 7. That’s all for the negatives.
Now the positives and oh boy there are a lot. First off Pedro Pascal nails The Mandalorian as a character. He’s brooding, intimidating, and sells the part of a rogue bounty hunter who doesn’t trust anyone. Carl Weathers is a welcome addition to the series, even if his character has some awful motives in killing his best hunter for money. Baby Yoda is a great central plot point and the producers implement the use of the Force with him very nicely that doesn’t make him overpowered. The Empire has a motive to find him at any means necessary which brings up some great fight scenes in the back half of the season. But that last episode of the season had me smiling from ear to ear and really had me engaged. When Gideon climbed out of the crashed TIE Fighter with the Darksaber in hand, it had me wanting more. Also, Jason Sudeikis deserves to be punished for punching Baby Yoda. Seriously how could you do that to him?
In conclusion, the kick-off to Disney+’s golden goose was amazing and I can’t wait for season 2 in October.
