Many have been caught off guard by the sudden ban on the popular social media platform, TikTok. For them, it wasn't simply a fun app, but their livelihood.
TikTok should not be banned for multiple reasons and the government does not understand that.
Many creators have built their careers in promoting businesses or creating content through this app. To many small business owners and influencers, this was the app through which their businesses scaled and became famous.
However, with the ban in effect today, the same stakeholders stare at an uncertain future. Overnight, their means of livelihood and an avenue to their audience were snatched away.
Opponents claim the government took this decision hurriedly and issued the order without much deliberation. They could have handled the security threats in other ways that didn't hurt the users.
The ban proponents think that the move is correct and necessary to protect the nation. The app risk was too big and could not be ignored.
High school students also have a stake in the banned popular social media app. Many teens utilize the site for creative expression, amusement, and even educational resources.
Some think it's a distraction taken away; others see it as a lesson in what to tell young entrepreneurs.
President Donald Trump is trying to hold off on the ban even though he had wanted it to happen back in 2020. The BBC article, "US TikTok ban: When could the app be banned and will Trump save it?" stated, "He tried to ban the app while he was in the White House in 2020, but has now called on the US Supreme Court to delay the ban while he works on a "political resolution."
While the ban is delayed, Trump should find stricter regulations instead of a ban to balance security and livelihood concerns.
Whether this ban will not happen is not known. The one thing certain is that a big discussion of technology, security, and social media power in our lives has been unleashed.
