"A Legacy of Loyalty & Service" - Veteran's Day Assembly

RACHEL DEANDREA, Contributing Writer

On Tuesday, November 12th, North Brunswick Township High School held an assembly during periods 2 and 3 celebrating and recognizing veterans, including those who were past/present NBTHS students or NBTHS faculty. These people bravely served our country in many ways, and the ceremony was a beautiful way to honor their service.

After a short welcome speech, the ceremony began with the pledge of allegiance, led by SGO President Megan Keefe, and was followed by the singing of the national anthem provided by the Honors Choir, and finally a song performed by many NBTHS band students. Mr. Mark Zielinski then began a short introduction as to what Veteran’s Day is, why we celebrate it, and then explained this year's Veteran’s Day theme is “A Legacy of Loyalty & Service”.

Teachers from many different departments, such as English, History, Art, and Business, signed up their students to attend the ceremony. This gave many students from many different backgrounds and classes the opportunity to learn about and honor those who fought for our country. Students had the opportunity to hear speeches from Mr. Alex Diaz, a 10 year veteran of the US Marine Corps and history teacher at NBTHS, and from Mr. Michael Curran, a veteran of the US Air Force and NBTHS Alumni. The two talked about their background and experiences in the military, and the importance of appreciating and honoring our veterans. Curran expressed his gratitude for the military, stating, “I just want to say how meaningful and how appreciative I am to every single person’s service and everything that I got out of serving in the military. It truly means a lot.”

Finally, the ceremony wrapped up with the introduction of numerous veterans who attended the event and a short Q&A where students had the opportunity to ask them questions. Students even had the opportunity to participate in a drill call, where one of the drill sergeants called out “Are you motivated?” and students responded “Yes Drill Sergeant!!” Following this, the Honor Choir performed a beautiful rendition of God Bless America, and a performance of  America the Beautiful by the NBTHS band. After a short closing speech, the ceremony ended and students had the opportunity to converse with the veterans before dismissal. The assembly was a beautiful act of honor to appreciate and recognize the veterans of our country and all they have done for the people of America.
